The lesson of the past 10 days is….

The blog has been strangely quiet over the past 10 days or so. Thank you to everyone who got in contact to make sure I’m OK. You’ll be pleased to hear I’m fine and no I’ve not been off on some exotic holiday or struck down with a terrible illness.

No, the lack of posting has been caused by the utter chaos caused by the sudden and unexpected failure of my PC’s main hard drive.

Now I know what you’re thinking. A professional photographer like Gavin would have everything backed up just in case. Well you’re right, I have every wedding, studio shoot, training article and video I’ve every made safely backed up, but there’s a lot more on my PC then just photos.

Emails, correspondence, passwords, stationary, work in progress, internet favourites and mp3’s are just some of the day to day items that I never thought of backing up. Replacing them is taking forever!

So what is the lesson of the past 10 days?

B A C K U P !

Normal blogging will resume later this week.

Gavin.

Uups, that sounds strange. Sorry for your dataloss. Hope you'll be back online again. Like your 15 minute videos - keep continuing and keep ;-) anyway....

I feel your pain. No matter how hard you try at some point technology fails.

Feeling your pain also, been there and bought the t-shirt. Luckily had lots backed up. Especially the music. I mean if you tot up how much your music collection is worth it's quite a lot in general and it just sits there waiting to be lost.

I did loose one set of photos when my HD crashed, sadly taking with it one of my most favourite photographs.

Gone gone gone.

after 1 hard disk gone and after 1 full computer died, i got the lesson myself. Now with iMac i backup with an external hard drive automatically trhough time machine. Havent got any failure up to now... but just in case it should be safe. I strongly reccomend... the backup is there and you dont have to think about it...

I feel your pain Gavin, I think we have all been there at some stage. I back up regular but then when you just don't have time - BAM! and the HDD goes down on you!

Hope you get sorted asap, look forward to seeing more great Videos, tips and tricks.

happy to hear you are ok, but sorry about the computer/data problems. I think we have all been through that and maybe it's a man thing -- like not asking for direction -- but we keep doing it over and over again as if we truly believe it wont happen again. But in this case lightning does strikes twice and trice... Looking forward to your next blog entry. Regards - michel

Yep, like most others I've been there and done that - so infuriating. I've now got an external hard drive, and all the stuff I want to make sure doesn't get lost goes on that as well.

Hope you get things sorted soon :)

Waking up to two (count 'em - 2!) dead hard drives on April 1 of last year was NOT amusing... Lost some photos, some music, some documents. And now I have two externals going... Yep: BACKUP!

Glad everything is ok and you have been missed.

been there and done that - just lost my second hd in 2yrs. I never learn:-( glad you had the pro stuff backed up. Work in progress must be pretty gutting - bad enough when one of the kids turns off before you can save! Looking forward to seeing you back in action.

I know, been there and done that!
How about sharing how you did the product shot of your dead drive...nice job in light of the misery it put you through

harddrives are cheap, get two identical drives and setup raid 0 for mirroring/redundancy; and install the operating system on it.

Thanks everyone. It's become very clear that I'm not alone here. I've spent way to much time looking for a simple, low tech backup solution and nothing seems to fit my requirements. I'll write a post on my solution as soon as I have one!
