Breaking a picture up in to lots of small squares sounds like a strange thing to do until you see the results. Often referred to as the David Hockney effect you'll learn some useful techniques including how to make a custom grid and some great layer handling tips.

Gavin - I have LOVED your tuts through Photoshop Roadmap for quite a while. I only recently thought of looking for your site. Now I'm working my way through ALL your tuts here and I absolutely cannot adequately express my gratitude!!!! You are the BEST at at presenting tuts I've seen anywhere and even when the title/pic look like something I wouldn't be interested in or already know, when I take the tut I find out it's also awesome and you still give me more tips than I knew! This one in particular I want to bless you for! I have a freebie blog for digital scrapbookers and when I make them alphas, I have stopped making each letter on a separate layer because I simply don't have the time. I'd experimented long ago with how to make an action to do it, but failed, though I make and use actions regularly. The secret was making and using the grid!!!!
